More than 7.6 million people in the UK plan to buy a car over the next six months, a recent study conducted by Sainsbury's Finance has revealed.
This is a 49 per cent increase on the 5.1 million people who said they were planning on buying a new car in the same six-month period of last year.
Compiled in a report called the Car Buying Index, the research also reveals that the anticipated total spend on a brand new, used or pre-registration car over the next sixth months is £51 billion.
Steven Baillie, head of loans at Sainsbury's Finance, said: "We've been conducting our Car Buying Index for the past seven years and our findings would indicate that the numbers looking to purchase a car are certainly starting to pick up again."
Those purchasing a new vehicle may want to consider shopping around for their car insurance, as a recent study conducted by Which? found that 60 per cent of drivers who did just this after receiving their car insurance renewal quote found a lower one.
