Most garages do not do proper checks

Most garages in the UK do not complete car checks to a high standard, an investigation by Which? has revealed.

The watchdog tested 62 garages across the nation and just eight of them found all of the faults that had been introduced to a vehicle taken in for a check-up.

These included low brake fluid levels, an underinflated spare tyre and a broken car bulb.

Nearly 90 per cent of the garages tested failed to spot at least one of these faults.

Peter Vicary-Smith, chief executive at Which?, said: "This is a worrying snapshot of an industry that desperately needs to clean up its act."

He went on to say that the garages' failures to identify all of the faults could have endangered the lives of drivers and other road users.

Back in July, lovemoney.com advised motorists to replace any broken car bulbs before they take their cars in for an MOT.

The website claimed that doing so would reduce a vehicle's chance of failing the test.
