Road safety organisations join forces over speed camera cuts

Leading road safety organisations have joined forces to voice their concerns about the government's plans to switch off certain speed cameras.

Nine influential groups have put their names on a document called the Speed Cameras Communique, which stresses that speed cameras are an effective part of a programme that helps to save lives and reduce injuries on the UK's roads.

These groups include the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the AA, GEM Motoring Assist and the London Road Safety Council.

"Switching off cameras systematically would be close to creating a void in law enforcement on the road," the communique stated.

It goes on to claim that 84 per cent of fixed penalty notices for speeding are generated by cameras.

Earlier this month, research conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists revealed that some 44 per cent of motorists in the UK are in support of the government's decision to cut the funding of speed cameras.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800038758-ADNFCR
