Infiniti adds object sensing parking cameras
Posted By Jonathan Elder
Infiniti, the first car manufacturer in Europe to introduce a 360 degree parking camera display is working on adding Moving Object Detection to its existing Around View Monitor system.
The technology (undergoing final testing in Japan) uses the central screen display and a loud chime to warn the driver of objects moving around the car during parking. As a 360 degree system, anything moving to the front, rear or sides is detected. The system is activated when first starting the car, or when driving at low speeds. This technology helps supplement the driver’s vision in situations such as leaving a parking space or when emerging from a junction with poor side visibility. It also will help warn of small obstacles, such as animals, that may not be visible from the drivers seat.
Around View Monitor is available on the Infiniti EX and FX crossovers. The existing system uses multiple cameras to give a bird’s eye view of the car and its surroundings, and give audible warnings when the car is near an object. In addition, a “wide view function” provides a 180° view from both the front and rear ends of the vehicle at the press of a button.
The addition of the new Moving Object Detection function will further enhance the currently available Around View Monitor system without the need for any additional parking sensors. It will be introduced within the next year or two depending on market.
If you are not planning on buying a new Infiniti, you can add parking sensors or reversing cameras to an existing vehicle with out range of aftermarket parking aids.
