Insect remains can cause as much damage to the paintwork of a vehicle as bird droppings, research has revealed.

Car care company Autoglym has found that there are similar levels of acidity in bird lime as there are in bug splats.

If these are not cleaned off and are left in direct sunlight, they can cause the lacquer on paintwork to deteriorate.

Paul Caller, Autoglym's chief executive officer, said: "It's important in these summer months, when the flying insects of various types are most prevalent, that motorists are vigilant in removing bug splats as soon as possible."

He went on to stress that bug remains and bird lime can begin to degrade lacquer after just ten minutes.

Earlier in the year, ABC News reported that clouds of locusts had been spotted around most of the far west of Australia.

Local motorists were warned to stop regularly and clean their windscreens if the swarms of insects hit their vehicles.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800073115-ADNFCR
