REC: More needs to be done to improve at-work driver safety

More needs to be done to improve the safety and skills of those who drive for a living, according to a sector group of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
REC Drivers claimed that, while the number of road accidents caused by bad driving has fallen in general, the reduction has not been as great among those who drive for a living.
"A safer and more efficient freight industry can lead to reducing poor driving incidents and ultimately to safer roads for all of us," said Rod Harris, REC Drivers' chair.
He said that incidents of bad driving are due to a small minority of people, but added that action needs be taken to ensure that the right people are selected in the first place and that ongoing training takes place.
Lucy Wright, consultant occupational physician and director of clinical development for Atos Healthcare, recently spoke at the National Safety Symposium 2010 in Nottingham about how drugs and alcohol can effect work-related driving.
