More than a third of motorists regularly break the 30mph speed limit, a study has revealed.

A survey conducted by road safety charity Brake and Direct Line found that 36 per cent break this limit at least once a week and 72 per cent have broken it in the last year.

When it comes to breaking the 60mph speed limit on rural roads, 51 per cent said they had done so in the last year, with 20 per cent doing so at least once a week.

"Drivers need to take responsibility and drive within the speed limits of the road. Speed is the biggest killer on our roads and speed limits are there for a reason," said Henry Topham, business manager at Direct Line.

He said that drivers need to think about their actions and how speed can affect their reaction times.

Earlier this month, research by car insurance provider Admiral revealed that more than one in ten motorists in the UK have been convicted of a speeding offence.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800077197-ADNFCR
