Some 2.6 million motorists in the UK have admitted that they would drive without an MOT.

This is according to research conducted by Kwik-Fit, which also found that 1.6 million of these feel that they are justified in making short trips without an MOT.

The other one million said they would be happy to drive any distance without their vehicle having passed this vital yearly test.

Kwik-Fit also revealed that 17 million people would be prepared to be a passenger in a car that had not passed the test.

Ian Fraser, chief executive of Kwik-Fit, said that it was "worrying" that so many motorists are blase about their car's MOT.

"As 35 per cent of cars fail their MOT, there are millions of cars on the road that are likely to be unroadworthy and could pose a serious danger," he added.

Last month, RoadSafe called on transport minister Mike Penning to maintain the MOT test as an annual check-up, rather than making it less frequent to fit in with European rules. ADNFCR-2370-ID-800092365-ADNFCR
