Fuel costs stop people speeding

Rising fuel costs have been cited as the reason why most people have reduced their average speed over the last 12 months, research has claimed.
RoadPilot conducted a survey and discovered that 46 per cent of motorists had reduced their speed in the past year.
Some 33 per cent of these respondents said that they had done so because of fuel costs, compared to 22 per cent who said their reason was increasing road congestion.
Of those surveyed, 40 per cent said that they were now monitoring their vehicle's fuel consumption more closely than they used to.
"It appears that motorists are putting their own driving techniques under greater scrutiny than ever before and as a result their average speeds have started to come down, which can only benefit road safety," said James Flynn chief executive of RoadPilot.
Last month, a survey conducted by Brake and Direct Line found that 36 per cent of Brits exceed the 30mph speed limit at least once a week.
