The Tata Indica Vista EVX won two awards at the inaugural Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Brighton to London Future Car Challenge.
It was named the Most Economic Small Passenger Electric Vehicle (EV) and the Most Economical and Environment Friendly Small Passenger EV.
The vehicle was developed by engineers from Tata Motors' UK subsidiary Tata Motors European Technical Centre.
It completed the journey from Brighton to London at a cost of just £1.35, which is a fraction of the £6.17 and £4.80 used by a similar-sized vehicle with a petrol or diesel engine at standard energy prices.
The car only depleted 36 per cent of its lithium ion phosphate batteries over the 58-mile route.
A Nemo Electric Van converted by Nicholson Mclaren Engines won the award of Most Economic Light Commercial Electric Van in the RAC challenge as it cost less than £1 to power the vehicle from Brighton to London.
