Sunderland AFC Foundation has helped to launch a new road safety campaign that looks specifically at keeping children away from danger.

The foundation's after-school clubs will teach youngsters more about road safety using Tales of the Road materials from the charity Think!.

One of the focuses will be helping six to 11-year-olds learn how to find safe places to cross the road.

Road safety minister Mike Penning said that, despite Britain's roads being safe compared to those in other parts of the world, more than 1,600 children were killed or seriously injured on them last year.

"I hope that this scheme will see more children gain in knowledge and confidence so that we will see fewer tragedies on the roads," he added.

Back in September, road safety charity Think! started using Stobart Group and Tesco lorries to advertise one of its campaigns.

The vehicles displayed large adverts reminding drivers to take regular breaks and also to not use their mobile phones while behind the wheel. ADNFCR-2370-ID-800252361-ADNFCR
