One in four motorists who carry young passengers has broken child seat laws, a study has revealed.
The research, conducted by child safety charity LV= Streetwise, also found that, of those flouting the laws, 53 per cent never use a child seat or do not even own one.
A further 21 per cent do not use them on every journey taken carrying a young passenger.
Alison Shelton, spokesperson for LV= Streetwise, explained that an unrestrained child can be killed in an accident even if the car is travelling as slowly as 5mph.
"The five minutes it could take to install a child seat and check that everyone is safely secured may make the difference between life and death," she added.
Earlier this week, a survey conducted by Brake and business insurance specialist QBE found that 86 per cent of children think motorists drive too fast around their homes and schools.
