Nine models of electric and ultra-low emission cars that will be eligible for grants of up to £5,000 have been announced by the government.
Transport secretary Philip Hammond and business minister Mark Prisk made the announcement yesterday (December 14th).
The nine cars on the list are the Mitsubishi iMiEV, Smart Fortwo Electric Drive, Peugeot iON, Citroen CZero, Nissan Leaf, Tata Vista EV, Toyota Prius Plug-in, Vauxhall Ampera and the Chevrolet Volt.
From January 1st 2011, motorists across the UK will be able to get as much as £5,000 off the cost of one of the eligible models.
The ministers also revealed that five more regions will be fitted with electric vehicle charging points.
"Government action to support affordable vehicles and more local charging points means we are on the threshold of an exciting green revolution," said Mr Hammond.
Back in November, the 25th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition series was held in Shenzhen, China.
