Toyota to use UV-reducing car glass in 2011
Posted by Richard Sinclair
Toyota has announced that it is to fit some of the new vehicles it produces in 2011 with a special type of glass.
The glass technology reduces ultraviolet (UV) light penetration into the front of a car by around 99 per cent.
In order to turn ordinary car glass into this protective kind, the interior side of the window is surfaced with a high-performance UV-absorbing film.
"Windscreens, which use laminated glass, reduce UV by approximately 99 per cent through the use of a UV-blocking film between two sheets of glass in the laminating process," a statement from the car manufacturer explains.
It goes on to say that door windows, however, tend to consist of just one piece of glass.
This is often instilled with some UV-absorbing material, but this only allows it to achieve around 89 per cent protection.
Last month, Toyota initiated a customer satisfaction campaign to replace the hybrid electric water pump on a number of Prius vehicles.

That is a brilliant feature. Many of us spend hours a day in our car and receive extensive sun damage from the sun (aging, increasing cancer risks) etc. I think all auto manufacturers should start using this type of glass.
