Motorists should ensure both they and their cars are fit for the road

Before taking to the roads, motorists should check that their car is in good condition, but also that they are in a fit state to drive.

This is according to GEM Motoring Assist, which claims that people should give their vehicle a home-based MOT before driving, checking car lights are working and windscreen washer fluid is topped up.

The organisation also feels it is important that car owners make sure they are in good health or they could put their own life, or that of another road user, at risk.

One thing that the organisation recommends is for people to get their eyesight checked by a professional.

"Taking simple steps to ensure you are fit to drive will greatly increase your safety and help us further towards our goal to reduce the number of tragic road accidents each year," said David Williams, chief executive at GEM Motoring Assist.

People should always make sure that they do not drive if they have had too much alcohol to drink, but Confused.com recently found that 14 per cent of Brits will drink-drive this Christmas.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800307877-ADNFCR
