Info about speed cameras will be made available to public

Information about speed cameras will be made easily available to the public by April 2011, the government has claimed.

Road safety minister Mike Penning said that this information could include data about accident rates at camera sites and the number of motorists prosecuted after being caught speeding.

"Public bodies should be accountable and if taxpayers' money is being spent on speed cameras then it is right that information about their effectiveness is available to the public," he said.

Mr Penning went on to say that making information more accessible will help to show the positive impact that cameras are having on accident rates.

The Department for Transport will work with the police, local authority representatives and the Highways Agency to discuss what should be published, when and where.

Earlier this month, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents claimed that it is particularly important for motorists to keep their speed down at this time of year, as the adverse weather conditions increase stopping distances.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800314794-ADNFCR
