A total of 107,729 cars were registered in England in December, recent figures have shown.

The statistics, published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), reveal that the top selling vehicle in December was the Vauxhall Astra, with 4,759 units of the car being registered.

Second on the list was the Vauxhall Corsa, of which 4,089 were sold, and third was the Ford Fiesta at 3,740.

At the bottom of the list of the top ten most popular cars was the Vauxhall Insignia, of which 2,192 were registered in December.

"2010 was a year of recovery for the motor industry with new car registrations up 1.8 per cent on 2009," said Paul Everitt, chief executive at the SMMT.

He went on to say that economic conditions are still "extremely challenging", but that demand is expected to strengthen in the second half of the year.

Other figures from the SMMT show that bus and coach registrations fell for a third successive year in 2010. ADNFCR-2370-ID-800332709-ADNFCR
