Simple techniques can help to reduce car running costs

There are a number of techniques that drivers can use to reduce the running costs of their vehicles, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has claimed.
Simon Elstow, IAM Drive and Survive head of training and field operations, said that advanced anticipation, intelligent route planning and speed control can all help a motorist to get a much better miles-per-gallon performance out of their car.
"These techniques also make for better prepared, more aware and thus safer drivers; the main premise of advanced driving," he added.
The IAM has reduced the cost of its Ecolution eco-driver training course in the light of the recent VAT increase and the hike in fuel duty rates.
Last year, the Fuelcard Company advised motorists that they can reduce their fuel use by making sure their tyres are all inflated to the correct pressure.
It also said that maintaining a steady speed will increase a vehicle's fuel efficiency.
