Motorists should use air-con in winter

Motorists should turn on their air-conditioning systems occasionally in the winter to ensure they work efficiently when the summer comes around, according to Kwik Fit.

Research conducted by the automotive repair company revealed that 56 per cent of car owners keep their air-con turned off throughout the winter months.

Some 43 per cent of drivers said they turn off the cooling system in order to save money.

Kwik Fit claims that air-con systems are most effective when used regularly and that bacteria can build up if they are unused for months.

"Using air-con frequently helps keep it efficient, but even so, systems naturally lose gas over time and should be recharged every two years," said Ian Fraser, chief executive of Kwik Fit.

Last summer, ExchangeandMart.co.uk found that 81 per cent of people think air-con is an essential vehicle element and they would not choose a car if it did not have this feature.
