16% of Brits have driven without insurance

Some 16 per cent of drivers in the UK have admitted to getting behind the wheel of a car that they are not insured to drive.

Seven per cent of those quizzed by moneysupermarket.com said that they had driven their own car without insurance and a further seven per cent said they had gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle they were not insured to drive.

Peter Harrison, head of car insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "The number of drivers prepared to hit the road without insurance is extremely worrying."

He went on to say that those who drive without adequate cover are breaking the law and could face thousands of pounds in liability, as well as six points on their licence, and charges of up to £5,000 if they are involved in a crash.

"Uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million each year," Mr Harrison added.

Back in January, road safety minister Mike Penning said that the government is to introduce laws that make it not only an offence to drive without insurance, but to merely keep an uninsured vehicle.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800463556-ADNFCR
