Local councils should turn speed cameras back on

Local councils who have turned off their speed cameras should follow the lead of the Thames Valley Police in Oxfordshire and switch them back on, Brake has claimed.
The road safety charity said that these devices are vital in deterring many road users from travelling above the speed limit.
Julie Townsend, campaigns director at Brake, said: "It is outrageous that speed cameras are still being switched off in some parts of the country."
She went on to say that turning off cameras leaves communities "exposed to the perils of fast traffic" and increases the number of accidents that take place.
Ms Townsend said she recognised the budget cuts had put local councils in a difficult position, but that road safety is one thing they could not cut corners on.
Thames Valley Police decided to switch the cameras in Oxfordshire back on just eight months after they had been turned off as they noticed an increase in the number of people being killed or seriously injured on the roads.
