A high number of Brits think that they would not get caught if they drove while under the influence of alcohol, a new study has revealed.
Conducted by Brake and Direct Line, the research revealed that 53 per cent of people think there is a less than one in four chance of being caught if they were to drive while over the limit.
A further 31 per cent think there is less than a one in ten chance of being caught.
This research follows the publication of data by the government, which reveals that 813,288 screening breath tests were carried out on motorists by police in 2009, which means that just two per cent of motorists were tested.
Julie Townsend, Brake's campaigns director, said: "The number of breath tests being carried out is wholly inadequate in providing an effective deterrent and tackling the appalling number of casualties that continue to result from drink driving."
