64% of Brits have changed driving habits to save fuel

Some 64 per cent of motorists in the UK have changed their driving habits in an attempt to cut their fuel costs.

This is according to the results of a new online survey of over 2,700 people conducted by car supermarket Motorpoint.

The firm noticed that sales of fuel-efficient super-minis have increased dramatically in recent months.

Demand for models such as the Ford Fiesta has risen 30 per cent since last month, the company explained.

David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint, said: "It is clear from our poll that the cost of fuel is starting to have an effect on the way in which people drive, a trend that is likely to continue unless the government changes its motoring policies."

Earlier this month, What Car? magazine conducted research into the benefits of premium fuels and found that these performed little or no better than their cheaper equivalents.

Steve Fowler, editor-in-chief at the magazine, called these fuels a "unnecessary expense".ADNFCR-2370-ID-800502130-ADNFCR

If you can’t get a hybrid other things you can do save fuel is to clean out the trunk; drive smoothly (not aggressively), don’t accelerate super fast. Use the correct motor oil and use the lowest octane gas your car will take.

Also think about the timing of your journey. If you can avoid travelling in busy periods it saves fuel, as fuel spent idling in traffic is totally wasted. Consistent, top-gear cruising is much more fuel efficient than constantly braking and accelerating again.
