Countries worldwide celebrate road safety campaign

Posted by Richard Sinclair

A number of countries across the world will celebrate the start of the global Decade of Action for World Safety 2011-20 campaign later this week.

On Wednesday (May 11th), nations including New Zealand, Mexico and the Russian Federation are to launch the campaign with special ceremonies and events.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), a number of landmark national monuments will be illuminated with the campaign's bright yellow symbol.

These include Times Square in New York City, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Trafalgar Square in London and the Jet d'Eau in Geneva.

"Today countries and communities are taking action vital to saving lives on our streets and highways" said WHO director-general Dr Margaret Chan.

She went on to say that road traffic accidents are a "growing health and development concern affecting all nations".

According to the Decade of Action for World Safety 2011-20 campaign's website, every six seconds someone is killed or seriously injured on the world's roads. ADNFCR-2370-ID-800524272-ADNFCR
