Company car drivers should have regular eye tests

Posted by Susannah Mayers

Those who drive for a living should make sure that they have regular eye tests, the Fleet Safety Forum has asserted.

The forum, which is a division of road safety charity Brake, said that fleet managers should encourage their drivers to visit an optician.

A poster titled Look Sharp can be obtained from the forum for free, as can an e-guidance campaign pack, sponsored by Boots Opticians.

These tools serve to alert drivers and managers of the importance of regular eye tests in making sure hazards on the roads can be spotted in good time.

"Fleet managers must address the issue internally and consider their drivers' eyesight as part of their wider fleet safety strategy," Caroline Perry, marketing manager at Brake, said.

Back in March, car insurance firm Swinton revealed that over a third of all UK motorists have not been to the optician for between four and six years.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800526365-ADNFCR

All drivers should have regular eye tests, not just fleet drivers. I bet regular people get into crashes more due to eyesight than those who drive commercial cars. In America, they force you to take an eye test at the DMV when you renew your license; you cover your eye on the spot and start reading. The thing with eye sight is that it goes bad so slowly and gradually that you are not aware of it and you start to think that your blurry vision is actually normal. I know cause I am nearsighted.

I would have to concur that all drivers should take regular eye tests, not just drivers of commercial cars. As a wearer of contact lenses, I know how important it is to regularly get your eyes tested, but I do appreciate that gradual degradation of the eyesight is difficult to judge.
