Careless drivers to face £100 on-the-spot fines

Posted by Susannah Mayers

Careless drivers will face on-the-spot fines of £100 under new government proposals.

Those who tailgate, undertake or cut other divers up will be issued with a fine there and then rather than having to attend a court hearing first.

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "By giving police the tools to deal with those who present the greatest danger to others we can make our roads safer."

He added that the strategy "will also help the responsible majority to improve their driving".

The government proposals also include tougher action on those who drive under the influence of drugs.

Loopholes that allow drink-drivers to avoid prosecution are also to be closed.

Back in March, road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist revealed that UK drivers believe tailgating is the most serious offence committed on a motorway.

Some 85 per cent of those quizzed said this act causes dangerous situations.ADNFCR-2370-ID-800528902-ADNFCR
