70% of drivers think UK motorway speed limit should be increased

A massive 70 per cent of drivers in the UK think that the speed limit on the nation's motorways should be increased by at least 10 mph.
This is according to the results of a survey conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
Around 60 per cent of those quizzed said they would be more likely to stick to an 80 mph speed limit than they are to the current 70 mph boundary.
Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the IAM, said: "Even though motorways are the safest roads, increasing the motorway speed limit is a controversial subject."
"This is why we want to see a trial to test its impact on road safety, fuel consumption and driver behaviour," he added.
Earlier this week, a survey of young people aged 16-21 published by Brake revealed that four in ten young drivers think that breaking the speed limit in a 30 mph zone is OK to do.

Speed limits on British motorways should be raised by at least 10mph or even more.
Modern cars are more than capable of taking advantage of higher speeds.
When I go on holiday, I regularly drive in excess of 100mph without any problem.
When the road system in the UK is improved enough to safely drive at high speed then Yes, but at the moment the roads are just not good enough for speed, Roads in the USA are 4-5 lanes wide and there the very top speed limit is 75 but in most states it is only 60 or 65. When we have a road system approaching good may be we could think about it. But try to drive on the A14 or the A12 and you will have to think seriously about higher speeds.
