New safety system could prevent thousands of injuries

A new safety system has been developed by Thatcham and could prevent thousands of injuries each year.
The motor vehicle research centre's autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems include technologies such as radar, camera and lasers to cause a car to automatically stop before it hits a pedestrian.
According to Thatcham, more than 650 serious injuries and 64 fatalities could be prevented in Britain each year if the AEB systems were incorporated into all production models.
Matthew Avery, a research manager at Thatcham, said: "We are working alongside vehicle manufacturers to help develop them further in the future and would encourage the inclusion of such systems as standard fit in new cars."
He also predicted that the systems will be just as, if not more, popular than electronic stability control has been over the past decade.
Earlier this week, the Road Safety Foundation revealed that the number of accidents occurring on 15 of the UK's roads has been reduced dramatically thanks to a range of improvements that have been made to them.

It sounds like good preventative technology. I think Volvo already has pedestrian safety technology installed on their new cars.
