Some 149,080 cars were registered across the UK in May, new figures have revealed.
A report from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) shows that this is a 1.79 percentage point decrease on the number that was registered in May 2010 (151,791).
Of those registered last month, 127,061 took place in England, which is a decrease of 1.77 percentage points on the number registered in the same month of last year.
Some 13,115 were registered in Scotland, which is a 2.94 percentage point increase on the number registered in the country in May 2010.
Paul Everitt, chief executive at the SMMT, said that "strong performances" were recorded in the fleet and business sectors.
"Consumers remain cautious, but with significantly improved fuel economy, service plans and more affordable finance, there is great value on offer across the market," he added.
As for commercial vehicles, a separate SMMT report reveals that 23,026 were registered in the UK last month.
