Brake's mascot Zak the Zebra is attending a road safety event in Shifnal, Shropshire, today (June 28th).

Balfour Beatty Plant & Fleet Services has sponsored Zak's visit to the event, at which he will join a protest to call for a 20 mph speed limit and traffic calming measures on Curriers Lane and Barn Road.

Shifnal Primary School and Hopscotch Nursery are situated on Curriers Lane, which is adjacent to Barn Road.

Both currently have a 30 mph speed limit and narrow footpaths, so parents and teachers are concerned about the safety of children in the area.

"Nationally, Brake is calling for increased government investment in road safety, but we are also supporting communities who want to see local action now," said Julie Townsend, campaigns director at Brake.

Last week, Brake urged schools, nurseries, playgroups, child carers and toddler groups to start planning for Road Safety Week 2011, which will take place from November 21st-27th. ADNFCR-2370-ID-800602474-ADNFCR

30 mph is very fast in an area frequented by kids. Here in the States, areas around schools have a speed limit of 25 mph. Fines are doubled in these areas too for speeding.
