What do you take your kids to school in?

Posted by Tom Benjamin

With the new school term up and running the dreaded school runs are back on the daily agenda of parents across the country, but the question is, what is the best school run vehicle?

The good people at Tesco Cars have put this question to more than 600 parents, and perhaps surprisingly, the BMW X5 was named as the school run car parents would like to drive.

BMW's stylish SUV was cited as the vehicle that turns most parents green with envy when they see other parents dropping their kids off at the school gates.

Despite its reputation for guzzling fuel, the X5 was picked out as the best school run vehicle by one-in-five respondents, securing it a comfortable win with 19 per cent of votes cast.

The quirky but stylish MINI Countryman SUV finished in second spot, with 14 per cent of votes, with the Mercedes-Benz CLK Cabriolet rounding out the top three cars parents would like to drive.

Rebecca Ryan, marketing manager of Tesco Cars said: "For many parents, driving the school run can feel a little like 'keeping up with the Joneses'. It's understandable that drivers might get envious of those who can afford the luxury rides."

Most parents in the survey let their hearts rule their heads and opted for large and luxurious vehicles over small, economical models.

The Range Rover and Ford S-MAX tied in fourth spot with 12 per cent of the vote, followed by the Porshe Cayenne with 8 per cent and the Volvo XC90 and Nissan Qashqai on seven per cent.

Fiat's popular 500 and the Toyota Prius rounded out the top ten cars named as the best school run vehicles, securing four per cent of the Tesco vote.

Further research conducted by MumPoll.com found that mothers on the school run often try to 'get one up' on each other to avoid feeling inadequate at the school gates, which may explain the number of people that voted for luxurious vehicles.

If you have just one or two kids you don’t need to drive an SUV. If you just got 1 or 2 kids then imho the ultimate car to make other parents green with envy is either a Mercedes Benz S-Class or a BMW 7-series. I like the look of sedan’s more than SUV’s.

Battered Volvo. I think people are less likely to just stop in front of you when they realise you may just nudge them out of the way.
