Whats your favourite all-time movie car?

Posted by Fiona Birkwood

We can all recall watching films in our youth and marvelling at the motors that Hollywood stars had the opportunity to drive, but which was the best movie car of all time?

There is no doubt that there have been some amazing cars in films and TV series in the past such as the Batmobile, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Herbie, Kitt from Knight Rider and Greased Lightning, but none of these managed to secure a spot in the top five of a recent Auto Express poll.

Thousands of motoring enthusiasts took part in the survey and crown the 1963 Aston Martin DB5, which featured in the James Bond film Goldfinger, as the best of the lot.

The motor fought off tough competition from 50 big screen classic cars, which featured everything from Tom Cruise's wall-climbing Lexus in Minority Report, to the flying Ford Anglia Ron Weasley drives in Harry Potter.

Doc Brown's 1981 time-travelling DeLorean used in Back to the Future claimed second spot in the nation's top five most loved movie vehicles, and it still attracts huge interest from film fans to this day, with one of the remaining three expected to fetch almost $1 million (£634,000) at auction next year.

The 1968 Mini Cooper S featured in the Italian Job was a close third in the poll, with many car fans falling in love with the vehicle's natural agility and handling during the getaway sequence in the film.

Bullitt's 1968 Mustang GT 390 took fourth place, driven by car enthusiast and tough-guy Steve McQueen, and featuring in one of the best car chases of all time.

Rounding out the top five was another car driven by 007, the 1976 Lotus Esprit in The Spy Who Loved Me, which memorably switched to submarine mode and was driven straight into the Mediterranean.

A workable version was sold at auction in 2008 for £110,000 and is now in the Beaulieu museum in Hampshire.

Did your favourite movie car make it onto the list?
