What do you call your motor?

Posted by Fiona Birkwood

It's not uncommon to name your car, particularly if it's been with you through thick and thin and got you out of some scrapes, but now new research has revealed naming a car is more widespread than anyone thought.

Of course, celebrity names are proving particularly popular at the moment as the rise of the celebrity continues.

A survey of 3,000 motorists conducted by NCP car parks found that millions of people have named their cars after a well-known public figure, with Prince William, Rooney, David Beckham and Alan Carr all being honoured by motorists.

Other bizarre names included Holly Willoughby, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gaga and Cheryl – no doubt in homage to the nation's favourite Geordie lass Cheryl Cole.

The survey found that almost half (43 per cent) of respondents believe it is perfectly natural to give a car a name and 12 per cent went so far as to say it was "cute".

Even famous motoring enthusiasts are not immune to naming their favourite run arounds, with Richard Hammond the proud owner of Oliver, his yellow Opel Kadett, and Sebastian Vettel famously naming his Red Bull cars "Kate's Dirty Sister", "Luscious Liz" and "Kinky Kylie".

There were plenty of weird and wonderful names too, including The Chariot, Bullet, Babe Mobile and Destroyer of Cars.

But, generally people who name their cars stick to more basic options, with Betty, Bertie and Bob taking the top three spots in the most popular names list compiled through analysis of the poll.

The B-name domination ended in fourth spot with Percy, closely followed by Susie and Dave.

Boris, Freddie, Cheryl and Rosie completed the top ten most popular names.

How did you decide what name to give your motor?
